What can we learn from Seaspiracy (2021)?2021-04-22T00:00:00-05:00https://s4cleuven.be/2021/04/22/seaspiracy
Have you watched Netflix’s new documentary, Seaspiracy?

It uncovers the dirty hidden secrets of the fishing industry, especially its destructive impact on aquatic ecosystems.

Did you know…

🦐 Mangroves are a type of coastal vegetation that play a huge role in maintaining aquatic balance! They absorb even more carbon than trees found more inland, prevent soil erosion, are home to a huge number of aquatic and land species, and keep coastal communities safe from storm surges. The shrimping industry is the biggest cause of mangrove destruction.

🦠 50-80% of all oxygen on Earth is produced by our oceans! Microscopic phytoplankton near the water’s surface absorb sunlight and carbon and breathe out oxygen. When floating plastics cover the water’s surface, these phytoplankton can’t access sunlight, so it’s much harder for them to breathe.

🦈 Scary films and dramatic news stories have done sharks so wrong–they’re a much bigger part of ocean balance than we give them credit for! Without sharks at the top of the food chain, populations of smaller fish explode, run out of food, and eventually starve to death. This means no more food for other animals…including us humans.

🐢 Way scarier than sharks is the practice of bottom trawling: dragging heavy nets across the sea floor to catch shrimp and tiny fish. All kinds of marine life are caught in these nets, including dolphins, sea turtles, and sharks. By the time these animals are removed from the nets, they are already dead or injured. These nets also completely destroy the coastal coral reefs, the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth.

Watch Seaspiracy to learn more about how our violent overfishing and pollution habits are suffocating and massacring our blue lung, and to learn more about what you can do to protect it.

INFOGRAPHIC: Actionable steps for forested and freshwater ecosystem conservation2021-01-18T00:00:00-06:00https://s4cleuven.be/2021/01/18/infographic-ecosystems
You’ve heard it before: we need to protect Earth’s forests. They provide clean air, store carbon, function as critical habitats, regulate water cycles and the list goes on. At this point it has been etched in our minds that forests are essential. Then why are we as a global community failing to meet conservation targets?

Throughout 2020, we witnessed increasingly severe repercussions from human-induced ecosystem degradation. Forested and freshwater ecosystems have an interdependent nexus to regulate natural processes that sustain this world. It is an increasingly fragile bond that is deteriorating at the hand of climate change and human activity.

This relationship between ecosystems is severed largely in part through deforestation. Particularly startling this year was the rate at which global fires would wipe out forested ecosystems, consequently altering freshwater ecosystems. Each year, we face unprecedented wildfires. Fires are a natural process that provide benefits to some forested ecosystems, but we are experiencing more severe fires that are accelerated through human-induced climate change. These severe wildfires not only threaten plants and animals but can result in lasting damage to roots and soil. In a healthy forested ecosystem, tree roots protect soil structures that retain water and regulate a natural flow regime throughout the watershed. Additionally, the absence of vegetation leaves watersheds more vulnerable to flash floods, dangerous mudslides and extended droughts – threatening the integrity of freshwater ecosystems and the delivery of clean water downstream.

This is just one example of the progressively dire situations that stem from governmental inaction. The last year may have seemed all doom and gloom, but we have been presented a rare opportunity to reexamine our relationship with nature:

Internationally, we must not only protect but restore these ecosystems. We can must commit to nature-based solutions that optimize natural processes to ensure healthy ecosystems, thriving species and clean water. Through governmental intervention and guided by science, we can conserve 30% of land and water by 2030 to mitigate impacts from climate change.

Individually, we all need to reevaluate how we interact with our surrounding environment. We need to initiate conversations and vocalize concerns – with both our loved ones and strangers in local government. We can volunteer with local organizations on the frontlines, sharing the weight that is placed on their backs. We can even simply visit our local forest and listen to the life that unfolds.

2020 has ushered a number of crises across all facets of life, but one question remains: will these crises be followed by momentum for climate action? Will civilians pressure lawmakers to prioritize environmental policies; can lawmakers set aside differences and work towards a common goal; and will industry actors reevaluate their production processes and assume responsibility for their environmental impact? I believe that with purposeful voices and persistent pressure, they will.

Onze eerste spreker is Laurien Spruyt.

Onze tweede spreker is professor Kris Bachus.

Let's hope for a wet summer: "Risk of water scarcity becomes unacceptably high"2020-04-24T00:00:00-05:00https://s4cleuven.be/2020/04/24/drought
Nederlands hieronder

Hydrologist Patrick Willems and the Belgian Royal Meteorological Instituition KMI both stated that drought is becoming a serious problem in Belgium.
For several weeks now, temperatures have been rising above 20°C, combined with hardly any precipitation.
Water scarcity is no longer far removed from our. daily lives
Last summer, water scarcity was already a real problem: farmers were banned from pumping water, police checked water basins.
Again, we seem to be heading for such scenarios.
The water consumption would be even higher this summer, as many trips abroad have been cancelled do tue COVID-19 measures. Patrick Willems suggests that we invest in this problem and that water plans are made.

The drought in Flanders is not exceptional. Last winter, gigantic forest fires, which caused an area three times the size of Belgium to go up in flames, already wrecked havoc on Australia. Drought and water scarcity is a structural problem, which has its origins in climate change. We must act now. Leave those fossils fueled. Tackle the polluting industries. Stop the deforestation and squeezing out the Amazon rainforest.

We moeten nu handelen.

How to stay connected while social distancing - and save the planet in the meantime.2020-04-23T00:00:00-05:00https://s4cleuven.be/2020/04/23/stay-connected
Nederlands hieronder

In these troubling Corona times, where social contact itself is a health risk, it is often a challenge to stay in touch with your friends, keep up with extracurricular activities or even follow your classes; thank God for all those messaging and video chat apps!
But we wouldn’t be the climate activists we are, if we wouldn’t question the impact they have on our environment. Today it’s time to take a look at what the sudden increase in activity on all those platforms – and I hope we can agree there are already way too much of them – is doing to our atmosphere.

Data is electricity, computers get hot

Using the Internet is using other people’s computers, and with computers we mean a global network of huge data centers with billions of computing nodes. Naturally, it takes a lot of electric power to keep all those computers running, and a lot more energy to keep them cool and efficient. Of course, these data centers don’t just run to forward your text message to a friend, but they are shared by a lot of different users. However, with each web resource you request, you bear a fraction of the emission cost that comes with maintaining the data centers. In 2012, the total greenhouse gas emission footprint of Internet usage and the systems supporting the Internet was estimated at 3.2% of global emissions[1] (for comparison, this is about the same amount as produced by the airline industry). It is safe to state that this number has only increased since then.

Ok, but what about video chat? When it comes to Internet usage, video streaming can be one of the most resource intensive tasks you can give your computer – as you probably will have noticed when everyone at home is watching a different Netflix series at the same time and the Wi-Fi is too slow to binge your own series. Another 2012 study has shown that a 5 hour video call can produce between 4 and 215kg CO2e[2].

Does this mean we have to stop using online communication platforms alltogether? Of course not! Video conferencing can cause a significant improvement in your carbon footprint when you would otherwise have to drive to a destination to have your in-person meeting you can now host on-line. In fact, you would have to drive 20km by car to cancel out the emissions of a regular video call. There are even other ways in which on-line conferencing can be better for the environment than face-to-face meetings. Sadly enough, that’s not really an option in this quarantine.

What if you really want to play that on-line party game with your friends, or you want to organize an on-line cantus with your student organization? And what about all those teamwork deadlines crushing in on you by the end of this exceptional on-line semester? Here are our picks for climate friendly communication:

Ungleich.ch is a Swiss based company that provides web and communication services. Their data center in Switzerland is entirely powered by zero carbon hydro-electric power and strong Swiss data and privacy protection laws apply. Ungleich hosts a free-to-use video chat platform talk.ungleich.ch, which is built with the open source video conferencing software Jitsi.

Framatalk is free and is maintained by Framasoft, a small French non-profit that promotes digital freedom through ethical projects. Framasoft software supports study groups and activist groups around topics like climate change, social justice and communities. Framatalk also uses the Jitsi platform.

Host your own communication! If you’re satisfied with these solutions, you can stop reading here, but if you’re a geek like me: there is a lot more you can do. If you’re a bit tech savvy and want to take your zero carbon emission communication to a whole new level, you can set up your own communication infrastructure. All you need is a carbon friendly hosting provider (which admittedly might be hard to come by) or your own server which for instance runs of your houses solar panels. As an example, Ungleich.ch hosts some messaging platforms like Matrix and Mattermost which both provide a collaborative chat instance and the video conferencing platform Jitsi. Note that this option often comes at a financial cost to support the infrastructure and you will have to spend some time to set it all up. This might be a viable alternative if you are part of an organization that requires an internal communication platform and that is able to support you.

It’s hard to track the exact emissions of these platforms (holistic impact analysis is very hard), but at least they make an effort to decrease their environmental impact, which we can only encourage. You’ll probably still have some environmental impact while using these platforms, and within the bigger picture of our current global situation this might not be a battle worth fighting, but what else can we do but strive for loving our planet in everything we do?

The Flemish Government must show more (and not less) climate ambition2020-04-12T00:00:00-05:00https://s4cleuven.be/2020/04/12/flemish-government-blocks-eu-climate-policy
Do you want to fix this issue? Support the petition of Extinction Rebellion Youth

Nederlands hieronder

What after corona? After this crisis, it is important to rebuild normal life, but in a way that has sustainability and social justice at heart. Unfortunately, this is not what our Flemish government wants. This week it became clear that they choose to maintain the current toxic system, instead of building a positive future, a future in which we avoid crises.

This week, Zuhal Demir, Flemish Minister for the Environment and Energy, put the breaks on a widely supported proposal from Denmark to take the European Green Deal as the basis of the recovery policy after the corona crisis. This proposal warns against the temptation of short-term solutions that will make the European Union dependent on fossil fuels for a long time to come.

The Flemish Government does not oppose this proposal because it believes that the Green Deal is not ambitious enough and that Belgium should do better, but because within the Green Deal policy and within the support policy around the corona crisis, Wallonia would receive more money than Flanders, according to De Standaard, De Tijd and EurActiv. The government believes that we should be ‘eco-realistic’ and cannot consent until there is clarity about the exact cost of the coronacrisis. Under the guise of ‘ecorealism’, the Flemish government has already actively counteracted climate measures on several occasions. They choose to not even do the minimum. This policy is not at all about smart use of money. Rather, it ensures that the Flemish Government does not have to roll up its sleeves and that it can get on with ‘business as usual’. In this scenario, the large polluting companies will get advantages over people and nature. We cannot tolerate this.

The EU sees the Green Deal as an ambitious plan with which it wants to set the tone for the rest of the world. In reality, this Deal is the absolute minimum that Europe can do to tackle the climate crisis, which implies that the Flemish Government would like to do less than the minimum. So says Greenpeace:

“The Green Deal contains important reforms and good intentions, but it does not achieve what science tells us is required to deal with the climate and nature crisis.”

The Green Deal aims to reconcile the myth of infinite economic growth with a sustainable policy, but even the European Environment Agency says the two are incompatible.

Because our government is now stepping on the brakes, it is holding the entire country’s climate policy hostage. This would not be possible in a country where there is only one climate minister. One minister, who effectively looks at the global situation and doesn’t just bury his head in his own sand. After the corona crisis, we need an even more ambitious Green Deal, a well worked out plan that sets the tone for the new society. This should serve as a basis for the recovery measures after the corona crisis and the support policy should be elaborated with a focus on sustainability. Let’s fight together for a sustainable and social Belgium with 1 climate minister instead of 4 different ones that only sow more division.

How to prevent a new pandemic: a new perspective on agro-industry2020-04-12T00:00:00-05:00https://s4cleuven.be/2020/04/12/agro-industry

Nederlands hieronder

“The biggest problem with new epidemics is not a missing vaccine, but the unwillingness to understand that those epidemics are not accidental.”

Rob Wallace, author of Big Farms make Big Flu, mentioned it earlier in his book.
There is a structural problem in our dealings with nature.
The agro-industry buys up land from smaller players and cultivates new land in rainforests.
In those old woods and rainforests, there was much more biodiversity, so pathogens remained trapped.
Today, the agro-industry is engaged in gigantic monoculture and livestock farming.
Monoculture is exactly the opposite of biodiversity.
A monoculture grows a single crop over gigantic areas.
Without this crucial biodiversity, diseases spread rapidly.
Unfortunately, this is also the most profitable way to produce food: the cheap land in the Amazon forest, the intensive use of pesticides and packing anmials together as efficiently as possible.
We then speak of a cost effective and not an efficiency for society.

How can we prevent another Corona virus?
And how can this help us in the fight against global warming?
Actually, these two go hand in hand.
We need to break with the profit-driven, polluting and destructive agro-industry.
This requires an agro-ecological model that takes planet and human into account.
Vary food production, bring different crops closer togethe.
Leave land barren, so that the land does not become exhausted.
Provide food production that meets people’s needs.
In other words: no gigantic production of meat or other overproduction.
This also requires production in the hands of people.
Today you can already see some good initiatives, such as allotments.
Gardens with varied crops, planted and harvested by ordinary people.
That is the right principle, but it is not enough.
The entire agro-industry needs to be transformed into a social model of agriculture that takes people and the planet into account.
In this way, we can combat climate change and create a barrier against new viruses.

#WatNaCorona2020-04-11T00:00:00-05:00https://s4cleuven.be/2020/04/11/wat-na-corona
Nederlands hieronder

These unseen times come with a lot of uncertainty, sadness, anger and loss.
We empathize with everyone who has lost someone, is ill, can no longer pay for their studies, has to work in unsafe circumstances, and so many others.
By no means this crisis is good for people and climate, even though we see an improvement in air quality and biodiversity is returning in certain places.
These changes are temporary and would be reversed when we return to business as usual.
Yet, we also see that, all of a sudden, the problems in our society and our system are being exposed; just look at the residential care centres and the healthcare industry that, that have been subject to major funding cuts, and are now in the front line.
As with climate change, we were not prepared for this.

Hence, it gradually becomes clearer that going back to business as usual is not an option, because this business is built on a system that puts the economy over people and nature.
In times like these climate measures are being phased out to leave large companies out of the wind.
We are in this crisis together and we have to come out of it together, we cannot go back to the way it was and we have to build our society and economy in a sustainable and socially just way.
In the following weeks, we are going to talk about a sustainable and social world after this crisis and we are going to look at what we do and don’t want to do in the future.
